Decorating Your Home? Start Here!

Decorating and designing a home can be equal parts challenging and rewarding, but at the end of it all, it’s a direct manifestation of your personal style and vision. Whether you’re renting a room or just purchased a mansion, giving your home a makeover is a great way to put your personality into your new place. For some of us, that’s easier said than done. If you want to give your home a new look but aren’t sure where to begin, you’re in the right place.

Start With Neutral Colors

When picking a color for your walls, it can be very tempting to go for something bright, uncommon, or unique. And for the right room, it may work! But as a starting point, we recommend keeping it neutral-ish until you have a more concrete idea of what you want. Think light gray, off-white, eggshell, or perhaps a lighter blue.

Painting can be a lot of fun, but it’s also a lot of work. Sticking with a neutral color scheme allows you to focus on other elements of the room and view them for their own attributes without undue influence coming from the walls. After all, you can always repaint!

Pick an Era, Stay There

Furniture! When it comes to bringing furniture into the mix, we recommend choosing one general time period and trying to stick with it. While there can definitely be a sweet spot in between eras, mixing them can be harder than it seems.

Love antiques and older style? Go for it! Mid-century modern fan? Great choice! Minimalist? We love to see it! Choosing most (if not all) pieces of furniture from one general style adds an element of cohesion to the room, and the house as a whole.

Go Green!

That’s right, it’s time for plants. Bringing in plants, whether it’s a hanging garden or a friend to sit on the windowsill, can provide a major boost for any room. Picking plants that occupy an empty space in the room without imposing on anything else can strike a great balance for design, not to mention having good vibes.

At the end of the day, it’ s best to go with plants that you like and that don’t require too much upkeep. A verdant element of green plant life gives some pop (especially against a neutral backdrop) and can provide a dynamic element to an otherwise static room. Just make sure to water them!
